COMPENDIUM OF RESEARCHES

The college boasts a panel of well-seasoned scientists, who have laid a solid foundation for researches in ZMU. And the following are some representatives.

Zhang Yi(1902-1980), first-grade professor, distinguished pathologist, one of the first authorized batch of master candidate supervisors. He got a doctorate of medicine from London University in 1938 and a doctorate of philosophy from Edinburgh University. Prof. Zhangyi used to Vice President of Dalian Medical College (later moved to Zunyi and renamed as Zunyi Medical University), Director of Pathology Section, President of Chinese Pharmacological Society, Vice Mayor of Dalu City, member of the third, fourth and fifth CPPCC, chief compiler of the first and second editions of the nationally adopted textbookPathologyfor undergraduate. He trained quite a few graduate students.

Wu Xiang(1910-1995), professor, distinguished pathologist. He assumed the posts as Director of Chinese Association for Physiological Sciences, member of the Standing Committee of Liaoning CPPCC, Chief of the Physiological Section of Dalian Medical College. He made significant contribution in his early years to blood circulation and physiology, setting up the physiological criterion for Chinese people’s constitution. Physiology Syllabus as well as a series of textbooks and reference books earned him favorable comments from the medical world. The State Council accorded him a certificate in honor of his contribution to China’s higher education.

Wei Xi, doctor of medicine, first-grade professor, member of Chinese Academy of Sciences, progenitor of the Immunology Section of ZMU (derived form Microorganism Section of Dalian Medical College). He was a deputy to the Second and Third National People’s Congress and a member of the 6th National CPPCC. He first successfully extracted leptospira and invented the vaccine against leptospira. He was awarded a prize for his outstanding contribution to the Anti-germ War by Zhou Enlai, the late Premier of P.R.C.

Wu Lu(1914-1983), second-grade professor, noted biologist. He was Director of China Zoological Society, Ecological Society of China, China Science Association, and Executive Director of China Amphibious Reptiles Association, researcher of Beijing Natural History Museum, Chief Editor ofGuizhou Fauna, Executive Director of Guizhou Science Writers, Chief of the Biological Section of both Dalian Medical College and Zunyi Medical University, deputy to the 6th Liaoning People’s Congress. He scored great achievements in the analysis and planning of the fauna in China, and in the exploitation of the wildlife. He compiled Guizhou Reptiles and some other monographs, his published academic papers exceed 40. He also won quite a few the First, Second an Third Prizes accorded by Guizhou Prize for Progress in Science and Technology. He wrote many popular science books likeThe Secret of the Snake Island.

Chen Rongdian(1917-1983), professor, reputed surgeon, CPC member and China Democratic League member. He graduated from Hsiang-Ya Medical College in 1942 and in 1945 he went to study anesthesiology at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was a member of the Standing Committee of the 6th Guizhou People’s Congress, Vice President of ZMU, Director the General Surgery Department of ZMU’s Affiliated Hospital. In addition to his profound attainments in abdominal surgery, he participated in the compilation of medical and surgical textbooks. He poured his heart into china’s medical education, the development of ZMU. He spared no efforts in his work until his last breath.

By the end of 2005, ZMU has 113 professors and 335 associate professors. And 250 of the faculty members have master’s degrees or doctorates, 7 are directors or executive directors of various disciplines, or editorial members of national academic periodicals.

Research Funds

Funds for research programs are mainly appropriated by the state, the ministries or the provincial government. Presently, the research programs reach 330, with 5 approved by the state, 5 by National Natural Science Foundation of China; the research funds come up to 21, 728 million RMB.

Research Conditions

The computerized library with a store of over 680,500 books have literature and information exchanges with more than 600 universities or colleges nationwide. There are 42 laboratories, 2 central laboratories, 2 key laboratories at the provincial level. 15.191 million RMB has been invested in the apparatus and equipments for researches. 10,000 RMB was poured into The Cell Engineering Experimental Center of the Affiliated Hospital, whereof the flow cytometry and the micromanipulation system take a leading position in Guizhou. There are 88 Teaching and Research Sections and 21 Research Sections, with pharmacology, immunology, anesthesiology, pediatric surgery and oncology as key subjects at the provincial level, and with biology and other 9 nine subjects as key subjects at the scholastic level.
