To enrich campus cultural life, motivate interest in English learning, and encourage students to participate in extracurricular activities, the comprehensive teaching and research office and student union of school of foreign languages held the second English Vocabulary Contest. The contest includes such three procedures as preliminary, quarter-final and final. The preliminary contest was held in May 22nd, 2017, the quarter-final and final were held from 7:00 to 9:00 PM, June 5th, 2017 at No.5 classroom, comprehensive Lab Building, Xinpu Campus, ZMU.
40 students from the year of 2014, 2015 and 2016 ultimately came to the quarter-final after the preliminary. Contestants, divided into different groups, would compete with each other to guess the meaning of English slangs, proverbs, idioms and aphorisms, and 20 of them came into the final after the elimination. The final was conducted in the form of listening comprehension, i.e. the corresponding Chinese meaning shall be matched when the words are read. The three procedures of the contest have fully demonstrated students' comprehensive ability in English vocabulary.
It was a brilliant contest. In response race, contestants raced to be the first to answer for the bonus points, leaving the atmosphere into its height. 2 first prize winners, 4 second and 6 third prize winners were awarded after the final. The contest has brought the insightful inspiration for both teachers and students in their future vocabulary teaching and learning, and the use of answer race or game by teachers may fully promote students’ initiative and activate classroom interaction, so that students shall have more competence in vocabulary.
